Child Safety Injury Law

Recently I bloggrd on child safety and child injury. I touched on a parents obligation to protect their children.

Unfortunately not all the vigilance in the world can protect a child or adult for that matter from serious injury at the hands of a drunk driver. So you need to know what to do for…

Understanding hyperthermia

Hyperthermia was a term very unfamiliar to me just two months ago. The week before I started work, my manager – Kyle Johnson – suggested I read the famous article by Gene Weingarten in the Washington Post about fatal distraction. As an ignorant 24 year old, I immediately thought, “Who could ever leave their child alone in a car?” I simply did not understand. Yet, it happens daily. In fact, I remember babysitting for a woman who once left her child in the car because she did not want to wake him… Continue

5 Gift Ideas to Motivate Kids to MOVE

My eight year old son’s “wish list” for the holidays includes an iPod touch, a Nintendo DSI, and a computer. His older brother’s list is pretty similar except that it also includes a cell phone. I like to think of myself as a “modern mom”, but come on…this is crazy (and I’m not just talking about the…

8 Tips to Prevent Your Chanukah From Going Up in Flames

Chanukah is the one time of year we allow candles in our home. Our family gathers together for eight consecutive nights and celebrates the time honored tradition of lighting the menorah. It’s a beautiful sight to watch the colorful candles burning each night.

However, this always makes me very nervous! I’m constantly thinking about the potential dangers of these burning candles and make every effort to keep my family and home as safe as can be while they are lit. It’s so…

Thanksgiving Day is about giving thanks. It’s also about food, family, and friends. This means spending a great deal of time in the kitchen with lots of people around, preparing for the big meal. 10 Questions Every Parent Should Ask the Coach

Weekday afternoons can be pretty hectic...picking up the kids from school, making a snack, starting homework, and shuttling kids from activity to activity. In my case, the activities are for the most part sports related. This season we’ve got baseball, soccer, and basketball on the agenda (with flag football starting up soon, as the fall sports wind down). When I take into account both boys, it adds up to a lot of different coaches!…

Parents and Drivers Can Help Keep Halloween a Fun and Safe Holiday for Children

Halloween is one of my favorite times of year – our office is peppered with bowls of fun-sized chocolates and more importantly, I love seeing my kids dressed up in costumes. When I look through our photo album, seeing pictures of Tommy dressed as Superman or Sydney dressed as Princess Leia always make me smile.

This year is no different – the Ross family…

Don’t Forget Your Mouthguard

See that picture with the broken, front, adult tooth? That’s my son! Just minutes before that was taken he had a beautiful set of intact teeth. Well...not anymore.

Yesterday, we learned first hand what happens to your teeth when you play "touch" football with your brother without a mouthguard! Somehow, my two boys collided while chasing each other around the yard, and the end result was not…

Walk to School, Talk to School: International Walk to School Day

My absolute favorite times of the day are when I get to walk with my son to and from school. I do everything possible during the school week to make this happen. Barring any thunder/lightening storms, frigid temps, or work commitments, we have a “date” at 8:00 and 3:30, Monday thru Friday. And some days, if I’m lucky enough, he still even let’s me hold his hand! I know it’s only a matter of time until this will no longer be the case.

It’s…

Just Say No to Soft Bedding

Cute Kids When my husband and I had our firstborn child, we did what all parents do – buy tons of stuff we simply did not need. We registered for a bottle warmer, not knowing that Tommy enjoyed a cool thirst-quenching bottle straight from the refrigerator. We bought a wipes warmer and realized that was $30 wasted since it scorched the wipes as opposing to taking the chill away. We purchased a mosquito net for his…
