5 Gift Ideas to Motivate Kids to MOVE

My eight year old son’s “wish list” for the holidays includes an iPod touch, a Nintendo DSI, and a computer. His older brother’s list is pretty similar except that it also includes a cell phone. I like to think of myself as a “modern mom”, but come on…this is crazy (and I’m not just talking about the cost)! It’s time that…See More

8 Tips to Prevent Your Chanukah From Going Up in Flames

Chanukah is the one time of year we allow candles in our home. Our family gathers together for eight consecutive nights and celebrates the time honored tradition of lighting the menorah. It’s a beautiful sight to watch the colorful candles burning each night. However, this always makes me very nervous! I’m constantly thinking about the potential dangers of these burning candles and make every effort to keep my family and home as safe as can be while they are lit. It’s so important to be aware of…See More

Thanksgiving Safety: 10 Tips to Help Keep Kids Safe in the Kitchen

Thanksgiving Day is about giving thanks. It’s also about food, family, and friends. This means spending a great deal of time in the kitchen with lots of people around, preparing for the big meal. The oven will be turned up high baking apple pie and pumpkin bread, and the stovetop burners will be working overtime in order to have everything ready. And, for some reason, no matter how hard most families try to move the festivities to other rooms in the house, everyone always ends up back in the…See More

10 Questions Every Parent Should Ask the Coach

Weekday afternoons can be pretty hectic...picking up the kids from school, making a snack, starting homework, and shuttling kids from activity to activity. In my case, the activities are for the most part sports related. This season we’ve got baseball, soccer, and basketball on the agenda (with flag football starting up soon, as the fall sports wind down). When I take into account both boys, it adds up to a lot of different coaches! These men and women, and in some cases moms and dads, are…See More

Don’t Forget Your Mouthguard

See that picture with the broken, front, adult tooth? That’s my son! Just minutes before that was taken he had a beautiful set of intact teeth. Well...not anymore.Yesterday, we learned first hand what happens to your teeth when you play "touch" football with your brother without a mouthguard! Somehow, my two boys collided while chasing each other around the yard, and the end result was not pretty.I didn’t know what to think when my kids came frantically running up to me in tears, when just…See More

Walk to School, Talk to School: International Walk to School Day

My absolute favorite times of the day are when I get to walk with my son to and from school. I do everything possible during the school week to make this happen. Barring any thunder/lightening storms, frigid temps, or work commitments, we have a “date” at 8:00 and 3:30, Monday thru Friday. And some days, if I’m lucky enough, he still even let’s me hold his hand! I know it’s only a matter of time until this will no longer be the case. It’s only about 10-15 minutes each way, but I cherish every…See More

“Boost” Your Knowledge: 5 Myths and Facts Parents Need to Know About Booster Seats

I run into booster seat confusion on a daily basis. "Does my child need a booster?" "When can they ride without one?" Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusing information available and parents aren't sure who needs to be in a booster seat, what function it serves, and why it is so important. The bottom line is that booster seats, when used appropriately, help tremendously in keeping children safe. It's hard to argue with research that shows using a belt positioning booster lowers the risk of…See More

Back to Routine...Back to the Books....Back to School Safety

How does it happen so fast? I feel like I was just putting away the backpacks and lunchboxes, and here I am pulling them out again! I love summertime...no afterschool activities, no homework (I sound like a kid), no strict schedules. I could go on and on....Well, reality is slowly setting in. I went school supply shopping with my boys, which was quite an experience. Between the masses of people grabbing to get the last glue sticks for a penny and my eager children begging for every new gadget…See More

Profile Information

About Me:
Hello! I’m Dr. Jamie, a Mom of Safe Kids. I'm a board certified pediatrician, the mom of 2 boys (ages 8 and 10), and the wife of a pediatric emergency medicine doctor. I enjoy discussing injury prevention and safety issues from the standpoint of both a mom and a doctor.

Currently I am a Spokesperson, Safety Advocate and Blogger for Safe Kids!

My pediatric career has been quite interesting and varied. Following residency, I joined a private practice. I was there for about a year and then I decided I wanted to spend more time at home with my family. So, I started working part time in the fast track area of the emergency room at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC. Then, in 2006, I co-created a pediatric website for moms, which I worked on from 2006-2009.

It was through this endeavor that my love for educating parents about pediatric issues emerged. I have had the opportunity to discuss children’s issues through many different venues including television, radio, print, and the web. Some examples include: The Doctors, Fox and Friends, WUSA9 (the CBS affiliate in Washington DC), Washington Parent, The Bump, PBS.org, healthreadio.net, Radio Disney, and many more!
